It’s COVID-19, this pandemic, which has upended our economy and made our citizens more dependent on government than ever. When the crisis started my staff and I worked with numerous constituen­ts on helping them navigate the new world of an unresponsi­ve unemployme­nt insurance system. I and the others in the delegation were able to steer quite a bit of CARES Act money to our communitie­s both through state programs as well as direct cash assistance to the county. If elected we hope to pull down more federal support through the HEROES Act and upgrade state assistance systems, which still have issues.

Cost of living:

I think we need to continue to build on what has been working. Besides current state and county efforts moving forward in West Maui, it is important we continue to expand other areas for affordable housing, particular­ly the community land trust model like Na Hale O Maui, which we secured funding for to help them deliver affordable housing to West Maui.
