WAILUKU — A Hana man was arrested for allegedly entering another man’s residence and assaulting him while taking his truck Wednesday.

Chaylvin Oliveira-Kalama, 26, was charged with seconddegree robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree theft and third-degree assault when he was arrested Thursday.

During his initial appearance Friday in Hana District Court, convening in Wailuku, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent asked that bail remain at $45,000 for Oliveira-Kalama.

He entered the residence on Alau Street in Hana while the homeowner was working in his yard, Kent said.

When the resident went into the house and saw OliveiraKalama leaving a rear bedroom and heading toward the resident, he tried to flee, Kent said.

He said Oliveira-Kalama tackled the resident on the living room floor and choked him multiple times while punching him in the head. The defendant also stuck his fingers in the resident’s mouth, causing him to gag, and addressed him with a racial slur, Kent said.

Oliveira-Kalama said he wanted the victim’s truck and, after the victim said the keys were in the vehicle, OliveiraKalama let the victim go and drove off in the 2007 Toyota Tacoma, Kent said.

He said the resident doesn’t know Oliveira-Kalama but had reported a prior attempt to force entry into his residence.

Oliveira-Kalama is on probation for abuse and also has prior convictions for abuse and third-degree assault, Kent said.

If convicted of the robbery and burglary charges, OliveiraKalama could face enhanced sentencing of up to 20 years as a hate crime offender, Kent said.

“Although his criminal history is limited as far as quantity, it’s limited also to crimes of violence and appears to be escalating,” Kent said. “It’s the state’s position that the defendant poses a serious danger to the community and is a significant flight risk.”

Judge Blaine Kobayashi kept bail at $45,000 for Oliveira-Kalama.

Oliveira-Kalama was ordered to have no contact with the victim and to stay away from his residence.
