Maui County Council member Tasha Kama will be available to talk with residents about issues, including the proposed Ka‘ahumanu Community Corridor project, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at her booth at the Maui Sunday Market at Kahului Shopping Center.

The proposed roadway corridor in the project extends 2.5 miles along Kaahumanu Avenue from Maui Mall to Main Street near the State Building in Wailuku.

The project will include considering proposals for how the corridor — one of the busiest roadways on Maui — and adjacent land will be used for new housing, transportation, pedestrian and landscaping options, according to a news release from Kama.

“This corridor runs through the heart of Central Maui, literally the ‘spine’ traveling from Kahului to Wailuku,” Kama said. “This is our opportunity to help shape the future of this important roadway, and how we will interface with it.”

As growth occurs, she said residents are asked to consider whether the road should be a higher-speed vehicle-oriented roadway, a pedestrian- and bi

cycle-friendly corridor with lower traffic speeds or a corridor emphasizing public transportation.

Residents also are asked whether adjacent land should be used for higher density, more affordable housing; retail and office space; or mixed-use buildings that combine retail, office and housing units.

More details on the project, including a survey, interactive maps and virtual scavenger hunt, are available online at kaahumanucommunitycorri dor.org.

Kama holds the Kahului residency seat on the council.
