Fire destroys two-story home in Wailuku, displaces eight
Crews also respond to brush fires in Kula and Lahaina
A fire in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day destroyed a two-story home in Wailuku, displacing eight people, according to the Maui Fire Department and the Red Cross.
Crews received the call at 1:01 a.m. Friday of a structure fire at Liholiho Street. An engine from Wailuku; engine, rescue, hazmat and tanker crews from Kahului; a battalion chief and a fire inspector responded to the blaze, which was extinguished by 4 a.m.
The incident displaced four adults and four children and destroyed the two-story, 2,400-square-foot home as well as three vehicles. The Fire Department estimated the losses at $225,000 for the structure, $200,000 for the contents and $70,000 for the vehicles.
The cause was undetermined, the Fire Department said.
Volunteers from the Red Cross Maui County Chapter responded to coordinate emergency aid. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the residents in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed.
The Red Cross said that volunteers have been training to maintain social distancing and follow proper safety procedures to safely assist community members during the pandemic.
Firefighters also responded to brush fires on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Kula and Lahaina.
At 6:38 p.m. Thursday, crews received reports of a brush fire along Pulehu Road in Kula. Engines from Kula and Makawao and a tanker from Kahului responded and brought the fire under control by 7:01 p.m. It was extinguished by 8:06 p.m.
Conditions were gusty at the time, with winds of 10 to 15 mph.
No injuries or damages were reported. The Fire Department said that it was still calculating the acreage and that the cause was undetermined.
At 12:26 a.m. Friday, a brush fire was reported above the Lahaina Civic Center.
Engine, ladder and tanker crews from Lahaina; a relief callback crew; an engine from Napili and a battalion chief responded to the fire, bringing it under control by 12:58 a.m. and extinguishing it at 2:46 a.m. Conditions were similar with gusty winds of 10 to 15 mph.
The Fire Department said that there were no injuries or damages and that it was still calculating the acreage. The cause was undetermined.
