Dedication to highway program recognized
In recognition of their commitment to the Adopt-AHighway public service program, a team of employees from Hula Grill Ohana received the No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award from the state Department of Transportation Highways Division-Maui District.
Since 2008, the group of volunteers, called the Hula Grill Ohana, has carried out dozens of cleanups along a section of Honoapiilani Highway near Wahikuli Wayside Park in West Maui.
“During some of their cleanups, the Hula Grill Ohana picked up enough litter to fill as many as 90 trash bags,” said Ty Fukuroku, Environmental Management program manager for the Highways DivisionMaui District. “If not for their hard work and dedication, all that trash would have remained in the environment, where it can harm our island’s ecosystems. We greatly appreciate their contributions to the community.”
Managed and administered by the Highways DivisionMaui District, Adopt-AHighway is a public service program that partners with community organizations and businesses to protect water quality and keep pollutants from entering Maui’s streams and ocean environment. Participants
agree to adopt a 2-mile portion of a state highway for a minimum of two years, pick up litter on their section of the highway at least four times per year and undergo safety training before each cleanup event.
The quarterly No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award recognizes and celebrates groups that have continually met or exceeded the requirements of the Adopt-A-Highway program.
