DOH warns public about hazards of multiple food products
The state Department of Health is alerting the public about contamination risks from certain bags of frozen fruit and packages of raw oysters, as well as choking hazards from some fruit jelly cups.
The department issued warnings for multiple products on Friday, including:
≤ Raw oysters exported from Dai One Food Co. Ltd. Republic of Korea, which may be potentially contaminated with norovirus. DOH notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of five illnesses from individuals who consumed raw oyster shooters at a Hawaii restaurant on May 10.
Dai One Food Co. has voluntarily recalled individual quick freezing raw oysters harvested between Feb. 2 and 4, 2022, along with April 13 and 14, 2022, that were shipped from Korea and distributed to restaurants and retailers in Hawaii, Georgia and Minnesota. Lot numbers affected are: D021031, D021041 and D020481.
Restaurants and retailers should not sell the oysters and should dispose of any products by throwing them in the garbage or returning to their retailer or distributor for destruction.
≤ Great Value frozen fruit products sold at Walmart that were voluntarily recalled by Willamette Valley Fruit Co. because of the potential presence of hepatitis A.
The affected products include Great Value Sliced Strawberries, 64-ounce bags, with lot number 4018305 and a best by date of July 19, 2024, as well as lot number 4019305 with a best by date of July 20, 2024.
Also affected are the Great Value Mixed Fruit, 64-ounce bags, with lot number 4024205 and a best by date of July 25, 2024; lot number 4025305 with a best by date of July 26, 2024; lot number 4032305 with a best by date of Aug. 2, 2024; lot number 4033305 with a best by date of Aug. 3, 2024; lot number 4034305 with a best by date of Aug. 4, 2024; and lot number 4035305 with a best by date of Aug. 5, 2024.
Great Value Antioxidant Fruit Blend, 40-ounce bags, with lot number 4032305 and a best by date of Aug. 2, 2024, are also included in the voluntary recall.
Customers are urged to check their freezers and throw away or return the recalled produce for a refund. Customers with further questions about the products covered by the recall may contact Willamette Valley Fruit Co. at (800) 5189865.
≤ Sun Wave Brand Mini Fruit Jelly Cup products sold at specialty retailers in the state that were voluntarily recalled by Richin Trading Inc. because of potential choking hazards based on the product size.
The impacted products include the assorted flavors package with UPC 715685121437, along with the mango flavor package with UPC 715685121444 and the lychee flavor package with UPC 715685121451. All have a net weight of 52.91 ounces.
The recall also extended to the 35.27-ounce packages of assorted flavors with UPC 715685121512, lychee flavor with UPC 715685121529 and mango flavor with UPC 715685121536.
Per the FDA, no incidents of consumers choking have been reported to date with the products, a DOH news release said. But small jelly cups have previously been implicated in choking deaths of children.
Customers who have purchased the products are urged to return them to the store of purchase for a full refund or dispose them in a sealed package inside a secure garbage can with tight-fitting lid.
