Democrats need more than slogan to reinvent them

- Erin McLaughlin Kahului Nick Drance Kihei

Are you ready for “A Better Plan, Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages”? That is apparently the new message for the Democrats. Of course, it sounds like a cheap mixture of a Trump advertisement and a Papa John’s commercial, but I have to give the Dems a break. They aren’t used to actually discussing issues because they generally just oppose the president and call everyone who disagrees with them a racist.

But now the people have figured out that they don’t actually have an argument. So it might be helpful to share some actual ideas as to how they will achieve the better jobs and better wages so the people don’t just think that they are mere talking points.

The other thing the Democrats need to do is to change their name. Thanks to great American Dinesh D’Souza, the people now know that it was the Democrats who owned the slaves, formed the KKK, passed Jim Crow laws and fought civil rights. They claim that they aren’t like that today, but as long as they hold on to that name they have to be tied to it. The name Democrat is symbolic with discrimination and racism. I would think that they would want to change that.

Bottom line, if the Democrats really want a fresh start and reinvent themselves, they need more than a slogan. legislation that is currently supported by less than 20 percent of Americans. Today, Obamacare is supported by over 50 percent of Americans and it allows the United States to join the entire rest of the industrialized world regarding healthcare.

Mind you, Sen. McConnell presides over the entire Senate, which is comprised of a number of different constituencies, not just those from his state.

Do we elect politicians on the basis of getting our way and imposing our will on others even if we are in a minority view? Not only does that sound undemocratic, but it also seems unpatriotic, given that this nation was built on the notion of “Government for the people, by the people.” It doesn’t say, government for some of the people and (specifically) not others.

What happened to “One nation, under God”? Is it one nation for some people and another nation for others? It appears as if getting re-elected has less to do with leadership and more to do with pandering to individual groups of people and corporate donors.

I wonder what would happen if people in Congress did not receive free lifetime “Gold Package” health care plans? We create winners and losers among brothers by electing a privileged class to govern us.

I think the majority of Americans believe in reasonable compromise rather than pitting brother against brother.
