Mass celebration in Kaupo on Sunday Congregation will observe Tisha B’Av
St. Joseph Mission Church in Kaupo will have one of its fifth Sunday of the month Mass celebrations at noon Sunday at its location between Mile Markers 33 and 34 on Piilani Highway, the road to Kaupo.
There will be a potluck meal and fellowship after Mass.
The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Tisha B’Av, the Ninth of Av, from sundown on Monday until after dark on Tuesday.
On the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av in 586 B.C.E, the first great holy temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by invading Babylonians. Seventy years later, the second holy temple was erected. Almost 600 years later, once again on the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, in 70 C.E., the Romans sacked and destroyed the second temple. The temple was the vital, sacred nerve center of the Jewish people. It ended the periods of the First and Second Jewish Commonwealth.
This is a day of grief, mourning and fasting. These acts are meant to help remember the events.
The Jewish Congregation at Beit Shalom will observe this day comprehensively. At 6:45 p.m. Monday, people will meet for Ma’ariv and the recitation of the Book of Lamentations-Eichah followed by Kinot.
At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, there will be a Shacharit-morning service and the recitation of Kinot-Lamentations. At 6:30 p.m., people will meet for Minchah the afternoon service and at 7:30 p.m., there will be an evening service before breaking the fast together with a light offering of food.
