High-surf advisory posted

A high-surf advisory has been posted for east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai through 6 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

Surf is expected to build to 6 to 10 feet through tonight. A north-northeast swell is generating the advisory-level surf, which should slowly diminish through tonight. It will be followed by a new north-northeast swell, which is expected to build to advisory levels again late Thursday night and continue through the weekend.

The advisory means there will be strong breaking waves and beach erosion and rip currents.

The forecast for Maui today is windy with occasional windward and mauka showers and scattered showers over leeward sections. Trades are expected to increase to 15 to 30 mph. High temperatures are forecast for 80 to 85 degrees and lows 67 to 72 degrees.
