Satel­lite cat­a­log topic of dis­cus­sion

Paul Schu­macher will give a free pre­sen­ta­tion ti­tled “The Fu­ture Satel­lite Cat­a­log” at 6:30 p.m. Fri­day at the Maikalani UH In­sti­tute for As­tron­omy Ad­vanced Tech­nol­ogy Re­search Cen­ter in Pukalani.

The U.S. mil­i­tary con­ducts an ex­ten­sive world­wide satel­lite track­ing op­er­a­tion to main­tain a com­plete in­ven­tory, or cat­a­log, of all know man-made ob­jects in or­bit around the Earth. Schu­macher will de­scribe for the gen­eral pub­lic the fun­da­men­tals of the satel­lite cat­a­log. He also will de­scribe the dif­fi­cul­ties of build­ing the fu­ture space cat­a­log and why this prob­lem is oc­cu­py­ing a num­ber of re­searchers in gov­ern­ment lab­o­ra­to­ries around the coun­try.
