State DOT gets credit for Paia traffic improvements
Let’s give credit where credit is due. Thank you for the support of the roadway changes through Paia (“Simple fix improves Paia traffic situation,” Letters, May 3). The state Department of Transportation is responsible for the new roadway improvements to Hana Highway that have helped the traffic flow through Paia town.
Having to balance competing interests — parking, traffic flow and safety for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists — was not an easy task. As a Paia resident, I think the changes have been a great success.
The county Planning Department had a small role to play in getting public input and compiling suggestions, but it is the state DOT that gets the credit for the decisions, final design and completed work.
The county Department of Public Works is responsible for the recent improvements to Baldwin Avenue. These improvements, along with those to Hana Highway, have extended right-turn lanes that have contributed to smoother traffic flow, as the letter writer suggested. Making these turning lanes even longer would require the removal of even more parking spaces, which is a tough call in Paia.
The county and state made good decisions that improved traffic flow while maintaining most of the on-street parking.
