Over-the-air TV is knocked out by tree

-

Over-the-air television users, who get their reception for free through an antenna, lost their signal from Monday evening to midday Wednesday due to a tree that fell on a fiber optic line, said a Spectrum/Charter official Thursday.

Dennis Johnson, senior director for West Region Communications for Spectrum’s parent company, Charter Communications, said that the tree fell on one of Spectrum’s lines due to Tropical Storm Olivia, which passed through Maui County last week. The line was in a pretty remote area, he said, and that repairs were completed and the signal restored as quickly as possible.

He said that service to Spectrum customers was not affected.

An engineer with KHONTV said Thursday that the fiber optic line severed the signal between Oahu and Maui.

Over-the-air TV allows people to receive digital signals via an antenna. Some older TVs require a digital converter box to receive the signal. On Maui, there are 12 stations available over the air, including all local TV stations.
