Mark Hayes to lead choir retreat
The Music Ministry Team and the Choir Committee of Keawala‘i Congregational Church will host a weekend music choir retreat with Mark Hayes Jan. 24-26. “Na Mele O Ka ‘Ekalesia: Songs of the Church” will culminate with a concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 26.
Hayes is an internationally known composer and arranger of contemporary Christian and sacred music. His music is found in the music libraries of churches and universities around the world. He is also known for his vocal and instrumental writing and is widely acclaimed for his unique choral settings, which draw from such diverse styles such as gospel, jazz, pop, folk and classical music.
The retreat is designed to empower church musicians by providing fresh insights into improvisation, accompanying and congregational hymn playing. Participants will be taught a select number of compositions of church songs for the solo voice and for full choirs for a variety of worship settings.
The intent is for participants to be able to share what is learned with their congregations and with the wider church body. The retreat will be limited to 120 participants, including church musicians, song leaders, choir directors, instrumentalists and anyone who enjoys singing.
There is a $20 registration fee per person. The fee will cover a choir music packet, meals and other resources. For more information, contact the church at (808) 879-5557 or www.keawalai.org.
