Why are off-island interests funding propaganda effort?

-

Where is the money coming from? I received a “survey” phone call from a Vermont area code. It was a series of questions designed to seem pretty innocuous. After some usual questions about my view of select politicians and the county council, it moved on the Maui charter amendments.

The caller was tasked with reading the county manager change, asking me for a rating and then moved on to a few other of the other amendments on the ballot. The way it was designed had obvious biases towards encouraging a no vote on all issues mentioned.

How has this kind of money and effort been mobilized by off-island interests? Why are a few of the sitting council members and the mayor so threatened by the changes that are a true benefit for our county?

How will the efficiencies of a more responsible government harm businesses and unions that have had an untoward amount of control over politics? It erases the insider advantage of big donors and the “good ole boy” system we have come to associate with politics as usual.

I am truly amazed that there is so much falsehood and misinformation arriving in my mailbox and in paid advertising. These are the tactics used to hide corruption. Maui should not be for sale.

Pukalani duct of 2018.

You’re already heading in that direction again by refusing to even meet with Judge Amy Coney Barrett.

Vote against her if you wish, but at least pretend to give the nominee an honest and fair hearing this time.

And please, no more blanket attacks. (“I just want to say to the men of this country: just shut up and step up for once.”) Mark Gallup
