‘Live @ the MACC’ features holiday, hula shows
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center announced a new series of “Live @ the MACC” events that will run every Saturday through Jan. 30.
Live @ the MACC started out with drive-in movies and concerts and will now be offering free livestreamed events featuring rock, pop, holiday and Hawaiian music concerts, hula and contemporary dance performances as well as visual arts. Each event will be livestreamed on the MACC’s website as well as its Facebook and YouTube pages.
The schedule is as follows: ≤ Saturday: Pat Simmons Sr. a founding member of the rock band The Doobie Brothers, and son Pat Simmons Jr., an island-style musician, will perform and talk story in a special collaborative concert.
≤ Dec. 12: Zenshin Daiko, a Maui taiko performance group, will put on a special, socially distanced show.
≤ Dec. 19: Behind the Curtain: Malama I Ke Ahi, Halau Kekuaokala’au’ala’iliahi will feature a special performance and talk story with Na Kumu Hula ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes.
≤ Dec. 20: Holiday Pops, a popular holiday concert by The Maui Pops under the direction of James Durham, will include favorites like “White Christmas” and “Mele Kalikimaka.”
≤ Jan. 2: Violinist Ignace “Iggy” Jang and pianist Jonathan Korth, two of Hawaii’s most noted classical musicians, will come together for a joint concert highlighting works by Vivaldi, Mozart and others.
≤ Jan. 9: Gypsy Pacific, a vibrant gypsy-jazz band based on Maui, will put on a show featuring guitarists Tom Conway and Phil Benoit, violinist Willy Wainwright and bassist Marcus Johnson.
≤ Jan. 16: Behind the Curtain: The Permanent Art & Craft Collection at the MACC, is the premiere of a special film that showcases the MACC’s collection from artists and craftspeople including George Allan, Deybra Fair, Pat Hickman, Ben Kikuyama, Bill Little, Peter Sinenci, Lonny Tomono and Tony Walholm. Kumu hula and former MACC Cultural Director Hokulani Holt is also featured.
≤ Jan. 23: Adaptations Dance Theater, Maui’s contemporary dance company, will perform their work, RUIN, created by Artistic Director Hallie Hunt as a response to climate change and its effects on the younger generation.
≤ Jan. 30: Jonathan Korth, who will put on a solo piano concert featuring works by J.S. Bach, George Gershwin and others.
All shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. except for the Holiday Pops concert, which is at 5 p.m.
