Trio of weekend fires keep crews busy across isle

Fires burn brush in Lahaina, crops in Kula, vehicles and trash in Wailuku

About 6 acres of brush were burned in a fire reported above Launiupoko Beach Park in Lahaina on Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

There were no injuries or damages, but the fire did come within 50 yards of one structure, according to officials. The fire was reported around 2:26 p.m. south of Kai Hele Ku Street and mauka of the Lahaina bypass road.

It was called under control at 4:20 p.m. with mop up and full extinguish­ing efforts still ongoing Monday evening.

Responding crews included Engine 3, Ladder 3 and Tanker 3 from Lahaina; Engine 11 from Napili; Tanker 10 from Kahului and the department’s Air One helicopter, which provided water drops on the area.

Officials said the fire appears accidental and that there were light winds in the area.

Crews also responded to a 1.5-acre brush fire that burned crops, farm equipment and a container at the Kula Agricultur­al Park on Sunday, fire officials said Monday.

There was no estimated dollar value on the losses suffered in the fire that began around 12:30 p.m.

Engine 10, Tanker 10 and Hazmat 10 from Kahului; Engine 5 from Makawao and Engine 13 from Kula all responded to the blaze.

The fire was called under control at 6:34 p.m. Sunday and extinguish­ed at 6:44 a.m. Monday, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was undetermin­ed.

On Sunday, crews also put out fire that burned several abandoned vehicles, rubbish and a 50-by-50-foot area of brush in Wailuku.

The fire was reported around 4:15 p.m. in the area of Piihana Farms.

Engine 1 from Wailuku, Engine 14 from Wailea and Tanker 10 from Kahului responded.

Crews finished up on scene at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
