Honolulu extends driver’s license renewal deadline to April

HONOLULU (AP) — City officials in Honolulu have extended the deadline to renew driver’s licenses, state identification cards and permits to mid-April in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The city said the extension would provide additional time for about 30,000 residents on Oahu to schedule appointments to renew their expired documents and credentials, some which have expired as far back as March 16.

The deadline is now set for April 13. All documents with expiration dates within the past year will remain valid through the deadline, officials said.

“The extension gives us a much-needed opportunity to continue to address the backlog created by COVID-19 shutdowns and social distancing requirements, as well as alleviates the pressure and anxiety for those who have been unable to get their driver licenses, state IDs or permits renewed due to these unforeseen circumstances,” said Nola Miyasaki, director designate of the city’s department of customer services.

Residents are encouraged to schedule appointments online to renew driver’s licenses, state IDs or permits.

The extension was approved under an emergency proclamation issued on Friday.

“COVID-19 continues to endanger the health, safety and welfare of the people of Hawaii and a response requires the serious attention, effort and sacrifice of all people in the State to avert unmanageable strains on our health care system and other catastrophic impacts to the State,” Democratic Gov. David Ige said.
