Jazz Maui to honor Black History Month

Jazz Maui will hold “A Musical Tribute to Black History Month” on Saturday to celebrate classic African American-inspired music and benefit music education programs.

The dinner shows at The Empanada Lady Maui in Wailuku will feature accomplish­ed Maui musicians and poetry by Bryant Neal and Ayin Adams, according to a news release.

Performers will include pianist and vocalist Sal Godinez, guitarist and vocalist Ron Metoyer, drummer Jesse Smith, bass player Jay Molina, contempora­ry jazz and soul vocalist Sarah Black, profession­al guitarist and music educator Prem Brosio and singer, songwriter, author and poet Tanama Colibri.

The two dinner shows will take place at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and are open only to adults over age 18, with ID required. Tickets are $10 and are available at jazzmaui.org. Seating is limited, and table reservatio­ns may be made by calling 868-4544. The event is semi-outdoor with socially distanced COVID-19 policies in effect.

The Empanada Lady is located at 2119 W. Vineyard

Street and offers traditiona­l Caribbean food from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

Jazz Maui is a nonprofit organizati­on that provides opportunit­ies for participat­ion in high-quality jazz music education and performanc­es for students of all ages.
