Crews still searching for two missing hikers

For a second day on Sunday, Maui Fire crews searched for two California men in their 20s who were reported missing by another party member in an area makai of the Waikamoi Trail in East Maui, fire officials said.

Time of alarm was at 5:11 p.m. Saturday and Engine 2 from Paia conducted a ground search using the trails until 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Rescue 10 from Kahului personnel were on board the Air 1 helicopter and also searched for the men Saturday night until they were redirected to Lanai for a plane crash.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Oahu conducted a night search in conjunctio­n with Engine 2 personnel overnight with nothing found.

Air 1 and Rescue 10 resumed search at first light Sunday along with Engine 2 personnel on the ground.

The public is urged to stay away from the area due to the potential for dangerous conditions and to allow searchers to operate as effectivel­y as possible.

On Saturday there were heavy rains, flooding and flash flooding in the area, fire officials said. A flash flood watch from the National Weather Service was in effect at the time. alarm, they found an 8 foot by 10 foot exterior storage shed fully involved. The shed was valued at $2,500 and its contents also at $2,500, fire officials said.

There was no damage or fire spread to the primary structure at Noe Street in Kihei.

The cause of the fire is undetermin­ed. The fire was under control at 9 a.m. and extinguish­ed at 11 p.m.

Fire crews from Kihei and Wailea along with the Wailea ladder company all responded.

None of the residents were displaced.
