Maui County extends landfill fee waiver for flood debris through April 2

-

Mayor Michael Victorino has extended the temporary waiver on tipping fees at the Central Maui Landfill to April 2 to allow Haiku residents more time to dispose of debris from recent flooding.

“Waiving fees at the Central Maui Landfill helps those affected by recent floods save some money, and it discourages illegal dumping throughout the island,” Victorino said in a news release Monday.

Those seeking a landfill tipping fee waiver must fill out page 1 of the county’s waiver request form, which is for affected Haiku residents only or a contracted hauler.

Waiver forms can be accessed on the Environmental Management Department’s Solid Waste Division website by searching for “Maui County Landfill Tipping Waiver” in the upper right-hand corner or by going directly to www. mauicounty.gov/Document Center/View/ 113249/Landfill-Tipping-Fee-WaiverRequest-Form-andRecycling-VerificationForm-Part-A.

The request form must contain the physical Haiku address of the residence where the debris is coming from. If a commercial hauler is used for several residences, all individual residents’ names and addresses must be attached for verification. When arriving at the landfill, drivers should go directly to the scale with the filled-out form and should not drive through the residential dropoff lane. Existing landfill prohibitions on certain items still apply,

including batteries, tires, fuel tanks, white goods and hazardous materials, among other items. For more information, visit the Solid Waste Division website at www. mauicounty.gov/1017/SolidWaste-Refuse-Services-andInformat.

If a resident is hauling noncontaminated green waste, they do not need to fill out a waiver and may follow the signs to EKO as normal. All construction and demolition hauled materials must follow normal procedures at www.mauicounty.gov/1739/ Commercial-Construction Demo-Waste-Accept.

The landfill will be closed at noon on Friday, Prince Kuhio Day, and on Good Friday, April 2.
