-

WAILUKU – A Hana man is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail after he was arrested for allegedly abusing and threatening a woman while their children were in the house.

Samuel Kalalau IV, 39, of Hana has pleaded not guilty to felony abuse, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, seconddegree terroristic threatening, two counts of abuse, interference with reporting an emergency or crime and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

The crimes occurred Jan. 14 to 15, according to a complaint filed against him.

During a 2nd Circuit Court hearing Wednesday, Kalalau asked for his bail to be reduced to $10,000.

Deputy Prosecutor J.W. Hupp asked for bail to be increased to $200,000, saying Kalalau has three prior convictions for abusing the same victim. He is on probation for second-degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling, also involving the same victim, Hupp said.

“His record is extensive,” Hupp said. “He poses an extreme risk to this individual and their children.”

He said Kalalau’s criminal history dates to 2005 and includes convictions for seconddegree assault, assault on a police officer, DUI, prohibited possession of a firearm and prohibited possession of firearm ammunition.

If convicted of felony charges in his most recent case, Kalalau could face a mandatory minimum sentence of three years and four months, Hupp said.

Deputy Public Defender Danielle Sears asked the court not to increase bail for Kalalau, who appeared by videoconference from the Maui Community Correctional Center.

Judge Rhonda Loo kept bail at $100,000.

An April 19 pretrial conference is set for Kalalau.
