Free online training seminars will focus on fair housing

Housing agencies and legal advocates will host a series of free online training seminars on fair housing each Thursday in April, the Maui County Department of Housing and Human Concerns announced.

Each session of the statewide seminar will focus on a different topic:

≤ April 1, Fair Housing 101, an overview and introducti­on to key topics for the month.

≤ April 8, Fair Housing in the Times of COVID and Cautionary Tales from Fair Housing Experts, covering topics of landlord-tenant relations and evacuation­s (eligible for Hawaii State Bar Associatio­n CLE credit).

≤ April 15, Race, Color and National Origin: Fair Housing Protection­s Training.

≤ April 22, Fair Housing: Access and Safety, covering topics of sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientatio­n, familial status and hanai status.

≤ April 29, Disability and the Fair Housing Act.

Prospectiv­e participan­ts must submit an online registrati­on form for the seminar by Monday, the county said. Applicatio­ns will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and each session will be limited to the first 1,000 participan­ts. April is recognized as National Fair Housing Month in honor of the passing of the Fair Housing Act and in remembranc­e of the assassinat­ion of the Rev. Martin Luther Luther King Jr. in 1968, the county said.
