Man arrested for allegedly shooting near homes
WAILUKU — Bail was set at $90,800 for a Molokai man who was arrested last week after he allegedly fired shots, including one that left a bullet lodged in a mattress where a 7year-old was sleeping.
Jes Jackson, 48, of Hoolehua was charged with seven counts of prohibited possession of a firearm; prohibited possession of firearm ammunition; five counts of first-degree reckless endangering; manufacturing, purchasing or obtaining firearm parts to assemble a firearm having no serial number; and prohibited alteration of identification marks.
Jackson isn’t allowed to possess firearms based on a prior felony conviction, according to the complaint against him.
He has prior convictions for third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia, as well as DUI, open container and abuse, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent said during Jackson’s initial appearance Monday in Molokai District Court, convening in Wailuku.
Kent said Jackson allegedly had a stroke eight years ago that causes him to have hallucinations. Jackson was in a separate dwelling of a residence he shared with relatives when he began to fire a gun that woke up neighbors, including five children, Kent said.
He said the bullet that went through a window frame and lodged in the mattress was discovered the next morning.
When officers arrested Jackson on Wednesday, police recovered seven firearms including a “ghost gun” assembled from firearm parts and a manufactured gun without a serial number, as well as ammunition, Kent said. He said Jackson’s wife reported he uses methamphetamine.
“The defendant poses a significant danger to the community,” Kent said.
Deputy Public Defender William Pannell said Jackson receives disability and asked for his bail to be reduced.
Judge Blaine Kobayashi kept bail at $90,800.
Jackson appeared by videoconference from the courthouse cellblock for the hearing.
