Man accused of assaulting officers with metal pipe

-

WAILUKU — A 28-yearold man was arrested last week after he allegedly used a metal pipe to threaten a security guard and assault two police officers in Kahului.

Cesar Miro-Quesada of Lahaina was charged with two counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of second-degree assault and third-degree criminal property damage.

Police records show he was arrested Thursday afternoon.

During his initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto asked for bail to be increased from $13,000 to $25,500 for Miro-Quesada.

“The state feels that the defendant is a danger to society,” Yoshimoto said.

He said a security guard told Miro-Quesada to stay away from the Harley-Davidson dealership building at 150 Alamaha St. in Kahului when the defendant grabbed what turned out to be a metal pipe and and began “aggressively running” toward the guard with the pipe raised above his head.

The security guard called police, and Miro-Quesada ran to Marmac Ace Hardware on Alamaha Street, where police apprehended him, Yoshimoto said.

He said that while being arrested, Miro-Quesada used the pipe to hit two officers on the head. One officer suffered a hematoma and mild concussion, and the other officer suffered a laceration that required five staples to close, Yoshimoto said.

Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for bail to remain at the lower amount for Miro-Quesada, who isn’t working.

Judge Kirstin Hamman granted the prosecution’s request to increase bail.

“Given the violent nature of the offenses, the court is concerned with the safety of the community,” she said.

If he posts bail to be released, Miro-Quesada was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to stay away from the Harley-Davidson dealership and Marmac Ace Hardware.
