Man gets five years in prison for three cases

WAILUKU — A 26-yearold Kahului man, who a prosecutor said “failed to follow the court’s orders in every way” was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday.

Second Circuit Judge Kelsey Kawano handed down the prison term to Cameron Moore, noting he needed to take into account Moore’s record and that Moore did not qualify for probation.

Kawano told Moore, who left the Maui Drug Court program, that it may take multiple tries to combat substance abuse but also applauded Moore’s effort. He told Moore to take on the programs that are available to him in the future.

Because Moore left Maui Drug Court, he faced sentencing in a 2017 case, in which he was charged with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and fourth-degree theft, court records show.

He was also resentenced to the same terms for two older cases in 2017 along with fees and restitution. The cases involved two counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, according to court records. Moore was on probation for those cases.

“I know I done wrong,” Moore said during sentencing, adding he will take the consequences he has coming and wants to be a good father to his children.

“I can be a productive member of society,” he added.

Deputy Prosecutor Ramsey Ross asked the court to sentence Moore to five years in prison on the newer case and to a concurrent term of five years in prison for the two older cases.

Ross said Moore was sentenced to probation in the two older cases, but then later committed more felony crimes in 2017.

Moore entered Drug Court and then left the program.

Moore tested positive for drugs while on probation for the older cases and also tested positive while in the Drug Court program.

“He’s failed to follow the court’s orders in every way,” Ross said.

In another court matter Thursday, Second Circuit Judge Peter Cahill sentenced a Waikapu man to prison for possessing drugs, saying that if the man was placed on probation he would just “be back in a couple of months.”

Cahill on Thursday ordered 49-year-old Brandon Sakutori to 24 months in prison and gave him credit for the six months he had already served in jail.

“You have been through this so many times,” Cahill told Sakutori, noting he has been convicted of 18 felonies, most of them drug related.

“Since coming out of Drug Court, you have been using constantly, that’s just what you want and what you want to do,” Cahill said during sentencing.

Cahill added that he didn’t think Sakutori would benefit from any more rehabilitation.

“You had everything we could possibly offer you,” Cahill said.

Sakutori said he started using drugs again when his parents died but prior to that had a productive life.

Cahill said he acknowledges that Sakutori did have a prior productive life but now his preference is doing drugs.

Sakutori plead no contest to third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug from an incident on Aug. 16, 2019, according to court records.
