Haiku man dies in head-on collision on Hana Highway

-

The driver of a pickup truck that was illegally passing vehicles in a no-passing zone on Hana Highway died at the scene of a head-on collision Sunday night in Haiku, police said.

He was identified as Mikael Bailey, 40, of Haiku.

Police said speed and alcohol are suspected as factors in the collision at 8:17 p.m. on the highway 0.3 mile west of Hamakuapoko Road.

According to police, preliminary investigation showed the 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Bailey was traveling east on the highway in the westbound lane when the truck collided into a 2008 GMC Acadia that was traveling west in the westbound lane.

Immediately after the impact between the Ford and GMC, a secondary collision occurred when a 2006 Toyota Tacoma that was traveling east sideswiped the GMC, police said.

The GMC driver, a 20-yearold Haiku woman, and her passenger, a 21-year-old Haiku man, were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries that weren’t life threatening, police said. The man and woman were properly wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision, police said. A 2-yearold Haiku girl was properly restrained in a child safety seat in the GMC and wasn’t injured in the crash, police said. The child was transported to the hospital for “a precautionary evaluation due to the severity of the crash,” police said.

The Toyota driver, a 52year-old Haiku woman, was properly wearing her seat belt and didn’t suffer injuries that required medical treatment, police said.

Police said Bailey wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Airbags deployed in both the Ford truck and GMC Acadia, police said.

The traffic death was the 14th in Maui County this year, compared with six at the same time last year.
