WAILUKU — Bail was increased to $10,000 for a man who was arrested Friday on a warrant alleging he burglarized his former girlfriend’s residence and assaulted her.

Jamie Karagianes, 40, of Kula was charged with firstdegree burglary, felony abuse, second-degree terroristic threatening and abuse.

During his initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent asked for bail to be increased from $6,200 to $10,000.

He said Karagianes was no longer living at his former girlfriend’s residence in Kahului on Feb. 20 when he unexpectedly entered the home while she was cooking breakfast at 4 a.m. He allegedly shoved her into the bedroom and was straddling her while placing his hands over her mouth for about 20 seconds, Kent said.

When Karagianes let her go, she was yelling for police to be called and he allegedly shoved her to the floor, causing an injury to her knee, Kent said. He said Karagianes allegedly said he would kill the woman.

In a pending 2nd Circuit Court case, Karagianes is charged with felony abuse of the same woman in December, Kent said. Karagianes was arrested on a $5,000 warrant alleging he violated a requirement to stay away from the woman when he was released on bail.

Karagianes has prior convictions for possessing drug paraphernalia, two counts of habitually operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, second-degree reckless endangering, fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, three counts of DUI and two counts of contempt of court, Kent said.

After being sentenced to probation, Karagianes was resentenced in 2017 to five years in prison for the paraphernalia and habitual DUI charges, court records show.

Deputy Public Defender Andres Tobar asked for bail to remain at the lower amount, saying Karagianes “is vigorously going to be fighting these charges.”

Judge Douglas Wright granted the prosecution’s request to increase bail to $10,000.

Karagianes was ordered to stay away from his former girlfriend and her residence.
