Two high school students to showcase award-winning art
Two high school juniors are winners of the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea’s START, a community-based high school artist immersion program for young aspiring artists, and will be showing their art on Saturday at the resort.
Cailyn Omuro of Maui High School and Sophia Salvador of Kihei Charter School were selected in the juried art process for the student artist immersion program, which also allows the students works’ of art be shown at the resort, side-by-side with Maui’s notable artists.
“I was really impressed with all of the talented applications we received — it’s wonderful to see the arts thriving in Maui’s schools,” said Rosina Potter, the Four Seasons Resort Maui art director who developed the program.
“Ultimately, the committee selected Cailyn and Sophia as each showed great skill in multiple mediums and styles, culminating in a body of work that offers a glimpse into their lives here on Maui,” Potter added in a news release.
Omuro will be showing her art from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the hotel’s lower lobby with her mentor Madeline Powell, who creates photorealistic paintings with husband, Peter Powell.
Salvador will be showing her art from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lobby lounge alongside Pascaline Laloux, who paints Hawaii-inspired watercolors on upcycled National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration maps.
The students had a professional artist mentor paired with them based on complementary style or medium to help guide the students through the program. Other aspects of the program include a $3,000 scholarship to apply to continuing their education in the arts.
The Resort’s Artists Showcase is an open-air gallery offering guests a personal “meet-the-artist” experience with more than 50 of the island’s most notable artists, the resort said. The artists show daily in a constant rotation from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the resort’s lower lobby and from 5 to 10 p.m. in the lobby lounge.
