UH-Maui to offer course on art in public places
The University of Hawaii Maui College will offer a course on art in public places for the fall semester, led by well-known and respected Maui artist and UH-Maui Visual Arts Program Coordinator and Instructor Michael Takemoto.
Public Art — History and Practice (ART 190) is a threecredit, 90-hour course limited to 20 students, according to a UH-Maui news release. However, interested individuals who are not currently students can take the class for no credit or audit it as long as they register and pay tuition. Because the class is designated as “firstyear experience,” it’s open to anyone post-high-school age.
“My goal is to create a collaborative and interactive course where students will learn about and understand the important role that public art has had around the world throughout history and especially today,” Takemoto said. “Students will also have opportunities to work as a team to design and create public artwork on the UH-Maui campus.”
Marc Antosch, a UH-Maui College graphic designer and instructor who has a Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Public Art from California State University Monterey Bay, encouraged Takemoto and assisted in the course development.
The course will begin by looking at and analyzing historical works of public art. Students will also visit and analyze works of art on Maui. The campus itself has at least 30 public art works that come from the State Foundation on the Culture and the Arts, donated artwork and student/faculty projects. The class will then design a work for a specific, public location and, finally, fabricate and complete the art.
