WAILUKU — A woman who was arrested after she refused to leave a Kihei restaurant Tuesday night is facing a felony charge after she bit a police officer, police said.

Corey Campbell, 38, of Watertown, Mass., was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and being an intoxicated person refusing to leave a liquor establishment.

At 6:23 p.m. Tuesday, Kihei patrol officers responded to a report of disorderly conduct at Moose McGillycuddy’s at 2511 S. Kihei Road. Restaurant employees reported that Campbell was yelling, refusing to pay her tab and refusing to leave the restaurant despite being asked several times, police said.

She agreed to pay her tab when police arrived but refused to leave despite multiple attempts by officers to have her do so, police said.

She was arrested and transported to the Kihei Police Station.

From there, she was being placed into a patrol vehicle to be transported to the Wailuku Police Station receiving desk when she bit an officer on his arm, police said.

She was transported to the Wailuku station and her bail was set at $7,000.

During her initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage asked for bail to remain at $7,000.

He said Campbell has a conviction for DUI in Nevada in 2007 and convictions for negligent driving that appear to involve alcohol in 2003 in Washington state.

Deputy Public Defender David Pullman asked for Campbell to be released on supervision, saying she has no recent criminal convictions. He said the behavior wouldn’t have happened “had she not been so drunk.”

“I don’t think it’s likely to happen again,” Pullman said.

He said Campbell has been staying at a hotel on Maui for the past few days and “has a more solid long-term connection on Oahu.”

Judge Chris Dunn kept bail at $7,000, citing the seriousness of the felony charge, which carries a mandatory minimum 30day jail term, and Campbell’s lack of connection to Maui.

She was ordered to not consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to stay away from Moose McGillycuddy’s in Kihei.
