Digital zoning map proposes to rezone 13 properties

-

A Maui County Council committee is considering a bill that would amend the Maui Digital Zoning Map for about 13 parcels, which include school, hospital and police station properties, to make them consistent with their current use and designation.

The parcels are located at the University of Hawaii Maui College, Kihei and Wailea fire stations, Wailuku and Kihei police stations, Maui and Baldwin high schools, Kamehameha Schools, the future Kihei high school, Kula Hospital and Maui Memorial Medical Center. The bill will be considered by the Planning and Sustainable Land Use Committee at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Maui County Council Member Tamara Paltin announced.

Bill 66 proposes to adopt the most recently amended Maui Digital Zoning Map (4) as the official zoning map for the island of Maui, including graphical portrayal of zoning designations.

Since the early 2000s, the Planning Department has been creating digital zoning maps for the county, which were made after reviewing all known associated hard copy and available digital information.

Utilizing Geographical Information System tools, the department put all the data together to build digital maps; however, there were some zoning inconsistencies.

“It’s important to understand that while the digital zoning map updating process addresses minor revisions, it also proposes policy changes to rezone certain properties,” said Paltin, who chairs the committee. “These updates seek to rezone properties consistent with their use, community plan designation and state land use designation.”

As part of this phase of the digital mapping project, the department recommends changing the zoning of 13 parcels to P-2 Public/Quasi Public District. These parcels have a community plan designation of Public/Quasi-Public.

Paltin said the committee will also discuss the South Maui Community Plan update and proposed change in zoning for a property in Kaunakakai.

Members of the public can view the meeting on Akaku channel 53 or provide testimony in person or via the videoconference link or phone number listed on the meeting agenda at MauiCounty.us/agendas.

In addition to receiving testimony in person, by phone or videoconference, the committee will accept written testimony.
