A pedestrian died after being injured in a motor vehicle collision Friday evening in Kahului, according to the Maui Police Department.

Police officers responded to a car crash around 8:47 p.m. Friday on Kaahumanu Avenue, about 565 feet west of Lono Avenue in Kahului.

A preliminary investigation revealed that an unidentified male pedestrian was within the outer westbound lane of Kaahumanu Avenue fronting the entrance of 170 Kaahumanu Ave. when he was hit by a black 2022 Toyota Tacoma traveling westbound on Kaahumanu Avenue.

Shortly after, a 2001 Honda Accord, also traveling westbound, collided into the same pedestrian.

As a result of this collision, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The 67-year-old male operator of the Toyota and the occupants, a 51-year-old female and 12year-old juvenile, all from Waihee, did not report any injuries.

The operator of the Honda, a 53-year-old female from Waiehu, did not report any injuries.

Police investigation reveals that the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when he was struck.

The operator and occupants of the Toyota and the Honda were all wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, police said.

Based on information gathered during the preliminary investigation, traffic investigators do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were contributing factors to this collision, according to police. Speed is not suspected as a factor in this collision. This is Maui County’s 11th traffic fatality of 2022, compared to six at the same time last year.
