Year of the Rabbit celebratio­ns to take place around Maui

Celebratio­ns for the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, continue this week in Lahaina on Friday and on Sunday at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center.

The Lahaina Restoratio­n Foundation invites the public to the Wo Hing Museum & Cookhouse from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Free activities include Chinese calligraph­y, the art of Chinese knot tying and learning the skill of mahjong playing.

There will be a cooking demonstrat­ion and tasting of Mapo tofu. There will be New Year’s readings and education about Chinese herbs and acupunctur­e. Keiki can make Chinese rabbit crafts at the art table.

The museum will be open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday with free admission. Chinese historian and collector, Dennis Ryan, will be talking story in the museum about the year of the rabbit jade artifacts and other special antiques.

Lion dances by Au’s Shaolin Arts Society begins at 5 p.m. by the entrance to the Wo Hing temple building. Lai see envelopes will be handed out to feed the lions for good luck. After firecracke­rs are lit in the yard, the lions will dance down Front Street, stopping in shops and restaurant­s.

At 6 p.m. Busaba Yip Douglas will present a PowerPoint on the history of Chinese New Year and the history of lion dancing.

On Sunday, Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center events will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Au Shaolin Arts will have a martial arts presentati­on at center stage followed by a lion dance and performanc­e.
