Cabello, Jonke earn Ho‘olaule‘a awards

Anson Cabello was named the Hawaii State Junior Golf Player of the Year in the 15-18 boys division, and Dillon Jonke won the Dr. Richard Ho Spirit of the Game award at the Hawaii Golf Ho‘olaule‘a Awards ceremony on Friday.

Cabello attends Kamehameha Schools Maui and has excelled in the classroom by being a National Honor Society member and recipient of the Ann Seiki Academic and Golf Scholarshi­p.

On the course, Cabello was a multiple HSJGA tournament winner in 2022 while qualifying for the Junior Americas Cup for the last two years. He won the Maui Interschol­astic League individual title in 2022, as well as the Oahu Junior Classic, Optimist Qualifier and Maui Junior Classic. He finished the year ranking third in the HSJGA rankings.

“Through my experience­s as a student-athlete, I have learned the importance of commitment, perseveran­ce, and responsibi­lity. And through golf, I have built a foundation that encourages me to do my best and strengthen my character,” Cabello said in a news release.

He has signed to play golf at the University of Hawaii.

Jonke, a member of the HHSAA state championsh­ip team at Maui Prep, is on the honor roll and the team captain of the boys’ golf and paddling teams.

While helping the MPA team win the high school state title by 38 strokes, he also placing second individual­ly.

“Golf has instilled diligence and taught me to strive for perseveran­ce in life,” Jonke said in the same release. He has signed to play golf at Cal State Northridge.

Cabello and Jonke were The Maui News Co-Boys Golfers of the Year in 2022.
