Maui County engineers to be honored this week
Maui County will celebrate Engineers Week over the coming days, an annual spotlight on the work engineers do and the contributions the profession makes toward developing innovative solutions to local and global challenges.
More than 40 engineers are employed by the county, which will feature five of their stories this week to honor the work they do for their departments. Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. issued a proclamation recognizing this week as Engineers Week.
“With their skillful problem-solving abilities, engineers are often creators of our future and we join the rest of the nation in celebrating their contributions with the Proclamation,” Bissen said in a news release Monday. “I’m especially proud of our engineers who are employed by the County of Maui. Their work in our different departments serve our community and make an important difference in our daily lives.”
The county will feature local engineers Dan Shupack, Paul Barany, Tammy Yeh, Sage Kiyonaga and John Datiles in stories and videos that will be posted on the county’s website at mauicounty.gov and on county social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter this week. One profile will be posted each day, starting Monday.
Shupack, a civil engineer with the Department of Management, will talk about his underground project; Barany, highways superintendent with the Department of Public
Works, will discuss how engineers helped get traffic flowing in East Maui last year; Yeh, a civil engineer with the Department of Water Supply, will describe how building with Legos influenced her career; Kiyonaga, a civil engineer in the Department of Environmental Management, will tell what happened when he took apart a battery-operated television set as a child; and Datiles, a civil engineer with Public Works, reveal how gummy worms helped make him an engineer.
