Bears toss combined no-no in win over Na Alii

Lauren Otsubo and Lennel Olaivar-Sugse each threw three innings of a combined no-hitter to lead the Baldwin High School softball team to an 11-0, six-inning win over King Kekaulike on Saturday at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului.

The game was the Maui Interschol­astic League opener for both teams.

Otsubo struck out five and walked none in the first three innings of the game, while Olaivar-Sugse struck out two and walked two in the last three innings of work.

Jasmyn Yoshikawa smacked two doubles for the defending MIL champion Bears, while Makanani Sonognini, Kalia DeMello, Bailey Nagasako, Shaileah Brown and Tacia Kahalewai also hit one double apiece.

Lahela Painter was 2 for 3 with three runs and Yoshikawa was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.

In the only other game on opening day, Casey Ann Ross smacked two hits, including a double, to drive in four runs for Lahainalun­a to lead the Lunas to an 11-0, five-inning win over Kamehameha Maui at the Lunas’ on-campus field in Lahaina.

Liahona Kaniho and Belle Dagupion also smacked two hits for the Lunas.

Makenzie Alexander struck out 12, walked none and allowed just four hits in the circle for the Lunas.

La‘ie Keahi had two of the Warriors’ four hits.
