Prince Kuhio Maui Ho‘olaule‘a to be held at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center on March 24
A free event to honor the birthday of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole will be held at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on March 24.
The Prince Kuhio Maui Ho‘olaule‘a will feature free keiki activities, handson exhibits, Hawaiian music and hula, according to a news release from event organizers.
Entertainment will include the Kalama School Ukulele Band under the direction of Benny Uyetake, Kuikawa, Josh Tatofi, Halau Kekuaokala‘au‘ala‘iliahi with Na Kumu Hula Iliahi and Haunani Paredes and hosted by Cody Pueo Pata.
Attendees can also learn more about the Halau of ‘Oiwi Art, a Hawaiian cultural center planned for Wailuku, as well as participate in other exhibits and hands-on activities with Maui Grown 808 LLP, Kapa Curious, ‘Ohana Kwon of Lana‘i, the Lahaina Hawaiian
Civic Club, Malama Ka‘ehu and Waihe‘e Limu Restoration.
Prince Kuhio was born on March 26, 1871. In addition to serving as a delegate to the U.S. Congress for two decades and establishing the Hawaiian Homestead Commission Act, he led establishment of the county system of government as well as the establishments of what are now known as Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Park, according to the news release. He also brought in millions of dollars for infrastructure projects like harbors, lighthouses and a hospital at Kalaupapa.
Daryl Fujiwara, the event coordinator, said that organizers “got great feedback last year about the change in venue to Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center from the Lahaina Banyan Tree.”
