Hawaii State Legislature celebrates Education Week
The Hawaii State Legislature is presenting Education Week starting today, a longstanding tradition at the State Capitol, to honor and recognize Hawaii’s educators, students, counselors, principals and staff.
Co-sponsored by Senate Vice President Michelle N. Kidani and House Representative Justin H. Woodson, the annual Education Week takes place during the legislative session and recognizes awardees during Senate and House Floor sessions.
“This week allows us to highlight the important work and achievements of education leaders across the State of Hawaii,” said House Committee on Education Chair Justin H. Woodson. (D-9, Kahului and Puunene). “Their diligence and commitment are what create a brighter future for our keiki, and they deserve to be recognized for their efforts.”
Among the awardees are Maui teachers. The Hawaii Department of Education-Maui District’s Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Complex Teacher of the Year is Cornelio “CJ” Ancheta; Maui District’s Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Complex Teacher of the Year is Malia Draper; 2022 Maui District’s Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Teacher of Promise Milken Educator Awardee is William Kjontvedt; and the 2022 Maui District’s Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Teacher of Promise Milken Educator Awardee Brianna Craig.
“This year we are particularly excited over our program, as it is the first time in three years that we are returning to our traditional format of inviting our special honorees to our State Capitol to bestow upon them recognition, admiration, and gratitude for their achievements,” said Kidani. “We do not want their contributions to educational excellence in our schools to go unseen.”
