Sabers outlast Na Alii 11-7 in 12-inning marathon

Kelela Gaspar led off the top of the 12th inning with a triple and then scored the go-ahead run on a field’s choice to help the Maui High School softball team win an extra-inning thriller over King Kekaulike 117 on Wednesday at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului.

Gaspar kicked off the Sabers’ four-run 12th that also included an RBI single by Kaci Amaral. The victory upped the Sabers’ record to 2-3 in Maui Interschol­astic League Division I play.

The Sabers scored a run in the top of the seventh inning that tied it up at 7-7, and the score remained that way until the 12th.

Maui High pitcher Aliyah Dimaya-Tumaneng threw 180 pitches over 11 2/3 innings, striking out five, while Na Alii’s Kamalei Kekaualua tossed 145 pitches over 11 innings of work, striking out three.

At the plate, Shaely Manalili smacked two doubles among her three hits for the Sabers. Naiya Gusman drove in three runs, and Kallye Pali and Amaral each had two RBIs.

Chiyo Salas went 5 for 7 with a double, an RBI and a run to lead Na Alii (3-2). Deykota Edlao drove in two runs.

At Lahaina, Lahainalun­a piled up 18 hits in defeating Kamehameha Maui 21-11 in six innings on Wednesday night.

Zabree Neizman had three hits and four RBIs, and Casey Ann Ross hit a tworun homer and finished with three RBIs for the Lunas (2-3). Liahona Kaniho and Lauren-Marie Rodrigues both also had three-hit days, and Rachel Pagdilao drove in three runs.

Staysia Haleakala, Ka‘ala Kaho‘ohalala-Watanabe and Alyssa Mateo each drove in two runs for the Warriors (1-4).
