QUILT SHOW GOES BACK ‘ON THE FENCE’

-

FORT BRAGG » Ocean Wave Quilters and Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise are happy to announce their second “On the Fence” Quilt Show. The show will be at Bainbridge City Park in Fort Bragg, on the fences surrounding the Veteran’s Memorial Building located on the corner of Harrison and Laurel streets.

This will be a free show for local residents, held Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Masks and social distancing will be required to ensure the safety of members and visitors.

The club held a similar show in late June on the same fenceline. On the sidewalk along N. Harrison Street, the quilters gathered to show off their year’s work and to sell raffle tickets for the two quilts they give away each year.

Dee Goodrich, a local quilter who has won many awards in previous juried shows showed off her quilt “Turkish Delight.” She said it took her about 2months tomake.

“It’s sad that we can’t have our typical show. I’m glad the City allowed this. We can see our friends,” Goodrich said. She and the other quilters all wore masks and kept their distance while catching up on each other’s lives.

Nancy Herron-Pike displayed several of her quilts including a crazy quilt with objects from her family. Its focus was on gloves and jewelry worn by her mother and handmade tatting made by her grandmother. The unique piece had a sweet, nostalgic quality.

The 2021 Opportunity Quilts will be on display, and this year’s theme is “Coastal Wonders.” Raffle tickets will be sold for two quilts, “Cetacean Migration” and “Jewels of the Sea.” Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10.

Proceeds fromthe sale of raffle tickets go to the awards and scholarships for local women offered by Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise and to the community projects of the Ocean Wave Quilters. Ocean Waves typically raises about $2,000 at the quilt shows through ticket sales. Those funds are used to pay for materials that are used to make donated quilts.

The Ocean Wave Quilters make quilts for every baby born in the coastal community, provide quilts to the hospital chaplains and shelters in the area, and make “touch” quilts for local residents suffering from dementia.
