Roses for mammograms in October
Raising awareness of the fact that mammograms save lives, during October Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Hospital and Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise will be giving a pink rose to each person receiving a mammogram during the month. The Radiology Department is typically busy in October and appointments should be made in advance. Dozens of roses are given away each week.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States, about one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection is the key to successfully fighting and living with breast cancer. The Radiology Department contact number is 707-961- 4665.

Second Chance at the Food Bank
On Friday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will be at the Fort Bragg Food Bank (910N. Franklin St.) providing free Frontline+ flea/tick repellent for the dogs of low-income folks. You need not bring your dog to the Food Bank, so you can pick up the repellent quickly and safely. Information about free puppy shots, spay/neuter and nail clipping will be available, as well as leashes, collars, etc. This is a project of Second Chance, Helping the Pets of People in Need. Mendocino High School reunion postponed
The Mendocino High School reunion for the classes of the 1960s previously scheduled for Oct. 2, 3, and 4, 2020 at Crown Hall in Mendocino regrettably has been canceled because of public health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 Virus. The reunion has been rescheduled to Oct. 1, 2, and 3, 2021 at Crown Hall.

HazMobile in Fort Bragg
The HazMobile will be in Fort Bragg from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, at Fort Bragg Disposal, 219 Pudding Creek Road, for your dangerous chemicals that can’t go in the trash. The HazMobile collects at some locations in Mendocino County almost every weekend. Food Bank Food Distribution in Mendocino
Each Thursday the Fort Bragg Food Bank will be giving bags of food free to anyone in Mendocino outside of Preston Hall, 44831 Main St., next to Presbyterian Church from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
League of Women Voters present Candidate Forum
The League of Women Voters of Mendocino County will present a Candidate Forum for candidates for the Mendocino Coast Recreation & Parks District (Long Term). Food Bank Kids Box Program on Wednesdays
The Fort Bragg Food Bank Kids Box Program is held every Wednesday, from noon to 3 p.m. No tag needed. Thank you to the James G. Cummings Foundation and Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund for feeding our families. Pull up to the curbside. Put on your mask and open your trunk. Wait for their volunteers to load your food. And drive away with extra food. Fort Bragg Food Bank is located at 910N. Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program
October date appointments for The Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) are available on Wednesday, Oct. 7 and Thursday, Oct. 22. HICAP will provide free and unbiased counseling, education and advocacy to all Medicare beneficiaries via a phone counseling session. Leos and Lions planning fun activities in spite of a global pandemic
The Fort Bragg Leos and Fort Bragg-Mendocino Lions have put together fun activities for our community, during the months of September and October and ending with a driveup Trick or Treat event on Oct. 31. These will be socially distanced, fun and creative. Are You a Senior Feeling the Covid Blues?
If you are feeling lonely or depressed during this time of Sheltering in Place, Redwood Coast Senior Center is here for you. Simply talking to someone can help us to feel better and not so alone. The Senior Peer Counseling Program offers free weekly telephone counseling for eligible seniors 60+ during Covid-19. Speaking to a peer who understands the challenges of aging can bring immense relief. The counselor can be a trusted and encouraging support enriching and brightening your life, particularly during this time of extended isolation.
The volunteer Counselors receive on-going training by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Their warmth, caring, and emotional support can bring immense relief. Call the Program Coordinator, Elizabeth Morton, LCSW, at 961- 4310 for further information.
A Face Mask Contest
Soroptimist Int’l of Noyo Sunrise presents: A Face Mask Contest! Show off your skills and design and construct an original face mask. There is an entry fee. No limit to number of entries. Entries due by Nov. 15, 2020. For contest rules and entry forms, go to the website at SI-NoyoSunrise.org.

Dan Hess, Branch Librarian, at the Fort Bragg Library, sent the following update: “Though the library buildings are closed due to Coronavirus, the branches are fully- operational—offering free online reading material and curbside pickup for books, music and movies. At Fort Bragg Library, please order from the online catalog and pick up material Mon-Fri between 10 and 4:20. Return items Tue-Fri between 11 and 3. Call 964-2020 Mon-Fri between 10-5 to schedule a pickup, get a library card or ask questions. Bookmobile is operating curbside as well. Please wear masks and observe social distancing when you visit. Fort Bragg Library cannot accept book donations until further notice.”
