A funway to waste time

- Larry Miller

Wonder if our two Little RiverMen’s Club Champions have their bags packed for their European golf and recreation odyssey. What will they say to Queen Elizabeth? What will they eat on the French Riviera? How will they do on the Scottish golf courses? Local golfer Dave Hautala remembers years ago playing the Old Course in Scotland. Dave said he bogeyed the first two holes than shot a tremendous 10 on the third hole. He said it was a privilege and a pleasure to play the Old Course.

Dave also recalls hearing that former Men’s Club Champion Hank McCusker shot one over on the Old Course. Not surprising; Hank has won the Little River Men’s Club Championship more than any other contender. Could our champion’s play golf at the French Riviera? Turns out there are dozens of great golf courses to play in the Riviera between Monaco and St. Tropez. You guys might want to try the MonteCarlo Golf Club where you can see three countries, France, Italy and Monaco from the fifth hole.

Speaking of the Old Course, my son Oscar Miller recently got a hole-in- one on the 11th hole; a three par. Also recently Oscar and his friend Jack Bush participated in an Old Course nine-hole tournament. Jack finished with a 30 which put himby far in first place and Oscar tied three other golfers for third place shooting a 33.

Oscar and Jack are “playing” golf at the Old Course via the online game called World Golf Tour. Oscar observed the most important aspect of the game is timing. You hit a button to initiate the backswing then hit a button to make ball contact. The timing is every

thing, get it right and you are long down themiddle, get it wrong and you are short or in trouble.

Sound familiar? Oscar says the game is the same as real golf in that you drive for show and putt for dough. “What a fun way to waste time,” was Oscar’s parting comment.

Last Wednesday, from my vantage point on the 16th green, I saw Emily Strachan and Cindy Ellis pushing their golf carts steadily making headway way up the third fairway. Seeing Emily and Cindy reminded me I haven’t lately seen many of our local women on the course. Because I haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they haven’t been playing golf.

On Thursdays and Saturdays regularly, Edith Goble, Gloria Van Tassel and Gwen Jacobson play the game of golf, and sometimes Emily and Cindy join them.

Keep it on the fairway, ladies.
