Trout fishing season picks up

- Don Moir

BLUE LAKES » The trout fishing has picked up. With the water temperature dropping, the trout are more actively feeding at all depths. You do not have to have a boat to fish Blue Lakes. Anglers have been doing well fishing from the shore along Hwy. 20.

You’ll catch ‘em! ——— ——— There are trout to be had. Successful trout anglers have been doing well fishin’ along Hwy. 20 and off the docks at Blue Lake Lodge and Pine Acres. Here’s a tip: If the water surface is like glass, fish closer to the top. You could cast a Roostertail, Super Duper, or Cast master. Or, use a sliding bobber with salmon eggs and a small piece of Powerbait. Cast it out and watch for a bite. If a breeze comes up, common on Blue Lakes, fill the sliding bobber full of water so that it will sink. Rig it with Powerbait only. This will float, keeping it off the bottom. Slowly reel in your slack and watch your line for a small twitch or yank. Set the hook — FISH ON!

The bass fishing is doing just fine. Try fishing the narrows area for best results. Drop shottin’ or slow draggin’ a senko or brushhog will get you hooked up.

Have fun !

CLEARLAKE » The bass bite is now going on strong. The stormfronts that have gone through our area last week should have really helped kick the bass into a all out feeding mode. BUT, it really did not do it. The bass are schooled up and at times are feeling the pressure of all the tournament anglers on the water. One of the tips I have heard time and time again

is to look for areas that still have some grass. They are the areas that many anglers have been having the best luck. Watch your line, the bite is soft. If you are not into fishing for the money, and just want to have a good time on the water catchin’ bass, try drifting a minnow. Right now the minnow bite is very, very good.

Many minnow fishermen are reporting that they are catching 10-15 bass per outing and many weighing 6 -8 pounds. Who knows, you might even hook into one of the 10 pound catfish on the lake too?

LAKE PILLSBURY » The roads up to Lake Pillsbury are very active (and ROUGH) with the deer hunting season. You can hear the sound of shots being fired off in the distance. The bass fishin’ up on our mountain lake has been pretty good. There is hardly anyone fishing the lake right now. NO FISHING PRESSURE to speak of. So what are you-all waiting for ?? Slow draggin’ plastics along points and timber is working well. (Senkos — Brushhogs — Sweet beavers or try drop- shottin’ (a Roboworm) You will find the bass at 15 — 25 ft. of water.— Don’t forget there is some pretty good trout fishin’ too ! Anglers that are trolling have had success pulling along an action disc with a salmon egg and a kernel of sweet corn or a Wooly-bugger. Set the down rigger at 20 -25 ft. and go up and down the west side of the lake.

LAKE SONOMA » The water is very clear, “gin clear.” Especially the mid lake areas. Anglers that fish the north side of the lake have had some success. The funny thing is that the bass are not holding tight to the submersed trees. They are out in the open water, deep. Snooping around for something to eat. This is kind of a winter pattern. The key is to use your electronics to find the bait fish, then you have found the bass.

Folks, the good fishin’ days are flying by, before you know it we will have cabin fever. I’ll be putting on Frogg Toggs and fishin’ in the rain. So, Go FISHIN’ ! What are you waiting for??

Thanks for reading. Remember, take a kid fishin’ and keep it reel! — Don 4reelfishin.com
