A par 4 hole-in-one

- Larry Miller

What are the odds of an amateur getting a hole-inone on a par four?

According to the Double Eagle Club, the odds are six million to one. A holein- one on a four par, three under par, is technically called a hole-in- one and the extremely rare hole-in- one on a five par, four under par, is called an Albatross.

Grant Pardini accompanied by his brother Jake and his grandfather Skip Wieden meyer recently defied the odds, six million to one, sinking his tee shot for the ace on the 335-yard par-four eleventh hole at the Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee. Skip reported that the brothers were playing from the far tees which makes the ace even more spectacular.

Grant and Jake are local coastal residents and regularly play golf at the Little River Golf Course sometimes after work and sometimes on weekends with grandpa Skip. Grandpa introduced the brothers to golf when they were youngsters and it stuck.

The Old Greenwood Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is a 7518-yard par 72 layout. The PGA sponsors a professional tournament at the Old Greenwood course once a year. Grant, 26, plays to a 9 handicap at the Little River Course while his brother Jake, 29, plays to a 13. Grant went on to shoot a respectable 85 at Old Greenwood.

Skins winners in the Skins game played on Wednesday afternoon were Don Romelli, Dennis Hartsock and Wayne Salyards. Jim Corsar won the fourth skin for the fewest putts. Congratulations to all.

Playing the Stableford format with Peter Barg, Dave Hautala and Bill

Speake at the Little River Course last Wednesday, Oct. 7. Peter was struggling a bit. We’ve all been there. Peter hadn’t played in a while; busy being a grandpa.

Teeing off on the back nine across the canyon, to the long par three 16th hole, Peter line drove it bouncing up between the tall grass and the sand trap on hole seven. Peter sighed and marched forward while guiding his remote-controlled electric golf cart. Peter’s second shot was good on the green but just on leaving him a 25-foot putt for par. He descended down to the hole putter in hand lined it up and sunk it for par

Peter looked up at us and said, “If that putt didn’t go in I was going to sell that bag of clubs for five dollars and throwin the cart for nothing.” Nice putt, Peter!

Nowwe come to Butch Carlstedt, 87-year-old Butch. On Friday, Oct. 2 Butch shot an 81, six strokes under his age. On Wednesday, Oct. 7 Butch did even better shooting an 80, seven strokes under his age. Hats off to you, Butch. Not many 87-yearolds can do what you do. You are an inspiration.
