Caring neighbors make Elk great

From Kathy Holmes: “One of the benefits of small-town living is caring neighbors. Our small town made plans to safely allow our children to trickor-treat. Neighbors who were interested made individual goodie bags for each kid to grab off the porch as families traveled in pods. The joy on the kids’ faces made it worth all the effort. Elk Cove Inn offered hot chocolate and mulled wine (for the adults) along with goodie bags. Sharon Garner made her ‘famous’ cookies the kids wait all year long to eat. Many houses decorated and got in the holiday spirit. It was a great night with a glimmer of a traditional Halloween. Thank you to all the neighbors and parents who helped make it a special night!”
Update on free COVID-19 testing on the Coast
According to Lucresha Renteria, Executive Director of the Mendocino Coast Clinics, on Oct. 23, “We received unexpected and unwelcome news about the agreement between the County and UCSF. UCSF terminated the agreement giving the County 10 days’ notice, without stating why.”
Both Mendocino Coast Clinics and Redwood Coast Medical Services were offering this free service. Now, as of late Friday afternoon, Oct. 30, USCF extended testing until Nov. 15.
“MCC will hold surveillance testing on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Thursday, Nov. 5, Wednesday, Nov. 11 and Thursday, Nov. 12. We have the capacity for 50 tests per day,” Renteria continued. This service is offered by appointment to all and is free of charge. If you want a free test between now and Nov. 15, call for an appointment at 707-964-1251.
It is important to understand this is a fluid situation that continues to evolve. It is also worth noting, UCSF canceled throughout the state and not just in Mendocino County.
Thanksgiving — Elk-style
Elk’s “The Little Town That Can” Food Bank continues to provide free food to those in need on Wednesdays at the Greenwood Community Center from 2 to 5 p.m. Additionally, Thanksgiving meal boxes are being planned. Donations are appreciated; please send them to the Greenwood Civic Club
at P.O. Box 282 Elk, CA 95432 and note that it is “The Little Town That Can Thanksgiving” donation.
To date, 3,188 pounds of food from the Fort Bragg Food Bank has been handed out. L&R Farms of Middle Ridge in Albion has donated over 300 heads of lettuce. Local bakers have donated sweet treats each week as well. Your generous donations have also allowed the program to provide personal care products, cat food, dog food, and other crucial necessities to families.
