Elk celebrates election outcome

Election revelry in Elk

It was hard not to notice the buzz around town after the election results were finally called on Saturday morning. Tourists and locals alike were congratulating one another and whooping and hollering it up in the street for much of the day.

This is an historic election in a variety of ways, but for many of us, what is most impactful is seeing a woman of color make history by becoming Vice President of the United States. Kamala Harris’ speech on Saturday night struck a deep chord with me as I watched with my eight-year-old daughter and the rest of my family:

“But while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourself in a way that others might not see you, simply because they’ve never seen it before. And we will applaud you every step of the way.”

The daughter of immigrants and a Californian, Harris, along with President-elect Joe Biden, will be taking office at a challenging time: the pandemic is surging, the economy is suffering, and continued disinformation and divisiveness will no doubt attempt to derail efforts of the administration.

But, for those celebrating on the streets of Elk and in many towns and cities around the country, there is a feeling of relief and hope that issues that threaten the well-being of so many people will at least be addressed: racial injustice, climate change and immigration to name a few. Indeed, it is hard for all children to “dream with ambition and lead with conviction” when racism runs unchecked and when global warming continues to increase.

However, a return to decency is at least a starting place where our children can begin to imagine a “country of possibilities” once again and start seeing themselves in a new way.

Concerned citizens

Many Greenwood Ridge residents reported hearing a lot of gunfire last week. While this may only seem like harmless target practice, it is important to keep in mind we are still in fire season and it does cause undue stress to many neighbors.
