Pomo Storytelling
On Thursday, Feb. 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Grace Hudson Museum presents an evening of traditional Pomo storytelling you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home. Master storyteller and Kashia Tribal Member Eric Wilder tells traditional Kashia stories that incorporate his own illustrations. Le Vent du Nord
Le Vent du Nord, a playful and accomplished band from Quebec, will perform on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. All you need only a computer (desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone, Android, or tablet), a reliably strong internet connection, and an email address to which Ukiah Community Concert Association can send the Zoom link. After the Feb. 7 performance, the program will be loaded onto Ukiah Community Concert Association’s YouTube channel and available to subscribers and single-event ticket buyers for 30 days. Mendocino Music Festival Encore 2020
Mendocino Music Festival is delighted to announce Encore! This new feature makes available to you, free of charge (and freed of Zoom glitches), all 18 of the virtual events they’ve presented since last spring—everything from behind-the-scenes glimpses of the Festival, to the richly varied Lunchtime series produced by Jenny Matteucci and Daniel Lockert, to chats with Lucia Micarelli and Kim Nalley. Music includes Susan Waterfall’s explorations of the Debussy Préludes Book I, the best of Stephen Sondheim, some extraordinary jazz singers, and Spencer Myer playing Chopin. Up Close and Classical
Up Close and Classical is a podcast series which takes a close look at the lives of classical composers and musicians. Each episode focuses on a composer, a theme, or a collection of works that have recently been presented in concert by Symphony of the Redwoods and the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra.
Through musical excerpts, historical context, and insightful conversations with musicians, Up Close and Classical invites you to lean in and listen closely to the music you love. From Bizet to Ravel, Episode 3 of Dr. Philip Lenberg’s podcast focuses on some of the most influential French composers of the late 19th century. Mendocino Art Center’s Artists Galleries celebrate artists, and share the diversity and beauty of their artwork with everyone who visits them. All of the artwork they display is available for purchase.
Some are original pieces and others are prints. Be sure to view the ‘info’ section of the pieces you are interested in to see their sizes and specifics. There are two ways that you can view our Artist Galleries. Move around in virtual 3-D real-time to see paintings and sculptures as if walking through an actual gallery, or scroll down to browse individual pieces of artwork. The Mendocino Art Center is a creative and enduring non-profit that has been supporting artists for over 60 years. Willits Center for the Arts
The Willits Center for the Arts presents two Willits Artists, Laura Fargey and Lynn Thompson throughout February The two women take different views on painting.
Lynn Thompson’s work takes color and makes exciting abstract and impressionistic images on canvas. Lynn tells us, “For over 50 years I have had the privilege to communicate my need to connect with the world in dark times and rejoice in the good times through my art. I find that I best express myself using abstracts to address the inconsistency of life.” Whether it be acrylics or oil paints it allows her to present a glimpse of nature in an ever-changing world. When she is creating a painting she chooses the colors and lines, then lets the piece determine its outcome. It allows the viewer to interpret the meaning of the piece for themselves.
Laura Fargey has been making art since 1967; she paints and draws from her own photographs. She adapts photos as vehicles for a personal statement, which she calls “Stylized Realism.” The working technique is deliberate, slow, and methodical, resulting in a tapestry of detail. Laura tells us, “I don’t expect certain rendered areas in my paintings or drawings to be literal or recognizable. There is always a combination of realism and abstraction going on simultaneously in every piece. Some works have more abstract areas than others; some are predominately realistic. The newest series, The Eel River, is a departure from the earlier work as it focuses on the beauty of a natural setting with no figurative influences.”
This show opens Friday, Feb. 5 through Feb. 28. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Gallery is located next to the Noyo Theater, 71 East Commercial St., Willits.
