What’s up with Rotary

- By Fort Bragg Rotary

FORT BRAGG >> March is upon us and we have a lot going on in the Fort Bragg Rotary world!

Our annual “Dine Out Ticket Raffle” is happening now. This year’s raffle is made possible thanks to our generous sponsor, Vocality Community Credit Union. There are 100 tickets available, and each ticket is priced at $100. The winner will gift certificates for 4 to dine at 12 amazing local restaurants and is valued at more than $1,800. Tickets are available from any Fort Bragg Rotary Member or at Sport Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, for more information, call (707) 964-5915.

Vocality Community Credit Union was founded 41 years ago by residents of Humboldt County. Its Ukiah branch just opened March 8 and it also has a mobile branch in Willits. Visit vocalityccu.org for more information.

Rotary members have been rolling up their sleeves and spending time volunteering at the Mendocino Coast Adventist Health Vaccine Clinics that have been happening these past few weeks. It’s such an honor to be able to assist in the process as the Adventist Health Heroes work tirelessly to get our community vaccinated. These clinics have been so well organized, and we have really had a lot of fun volunteering and seeing all of our community members as they come through to get their vaccine.

Our club is ramping up for one of our most favorite times of the year — awarding deserving Fort Bragg High School Seniors with scholarships for their posthigh school education.

We really enjoy the application and interview process as we love getting to know our local seniors. The Rotary Club of Fort Bragg will be giving out a minimum of $10,000 in scholarships to students in the Fort Bragg Class of 2021. We are still accepting applications so if you are a high school student and would like to apply, call the Fort Bragg High School office for details.

Speaking of scholarships, we have currently given 18, Adopt-A-FifthGrader scholarships as part of our partnership with The Mendocino College Foundation. AdoptA-Fifth-Grader is a program that helps motivate students at a young age to continue on to higher education by providing a financial incentive: A $1,000

scholarship to Mendocino College upon graduation from high school.

For every $500 donation, our club will match it with $200 to complete the $700 requirement to sponsor one fifth-grade student. Mendocino College Foundation will invest the $700 sponsorship, which grows to $1,000 by the time the recipient graduates from high school. To become part of Adopt-A-Fifth-Grader, or to donate to the Fort Bragg Rotary Scholarship Fund, contact us at fortbraggrotary@gmail.com.

March 8 was International Women’s Day and we couldn’t let this day pass without giving a shout out to the 21 women in our club: Angela Dominguez, Ashley Ashford, Aspen Logan, Chandra Blencowe, Diane Harris, Elena Bychkova, Eve Yoemans, Heather Baxman, Joan Woods, Judy Leach, Judy Martin, Kathleen Holmes, Kathy Westfall, Kristina Carbone-Smith, Linda Ruffing, Lynn Finley, Michelle Goodman, Mindy Slaughter, Ruth Sparks, Tabatha Miller and Tracy McDaniel.

A challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge comes change. These women push the envelope in every aspect of their lives and choose to challenge the world around them. We are so lucky to have each of these women in our club and our community. Their dedication to serve others makes them special but their talents, personalities, intelligence and drive make them extraordinary.

Additionally, our club is looking to expand our membership. If the phrases “Service Above Self” or “People of Action” resonate with you or if you enjoy volunteering and working towards making our community a better place, then Rotary may be a good fit for you! For more information on becoming a member or for more information on what Rotary is please email us at fortbraggrotary@ gmail.com. We would love to get you involved!
