Elk gears up for Poetry Month

- By Kristi Hahn

Community Notes

Just in time for National Poetry Month, Elk Poet Peter Lit has a new book out entitled “As Far As The Mind Can See.” Peter will be interviewed by Point Arena Poet Blake More on her radio show “Cartwheels in the Sky” on Saturday, April 3 from 7 to 7:30 p.m., on KGUA 88.3 FM out of Gualala. He will also be one of the writers featured at Gallery Bookshop’s Authors’ Night on Thursday, April 15 at 6 p.m. This is a Zoom event, so go to Gallery Bookshop’s website to register. Copies of his new book and his old one “Poets Are Always On Time” are available here in Elk at Matson Mercantile. Peter is known for not mincing his words and this collection is no exception, he reflects on life, death, and all the emotions in between. The title poem “Sometimes Life Just Rubs Your Face In It” ends discerningly, “We saw only the wild desert beauty,/sand and rock, hills stretching off,/infinities of color and distance./Nothing but mind/as far as the eye can see…” Congratulations, Peter. What a beautiful achievement!

From the Elk Administrative Services Support Team:

“The Elk Administrative Services Support Team would like to take this opportunity to introduce itself to our community. We formed this entity to relieve some of the administrative responsibilities from the Elk Community Services District and the Elk Volunteer Fire Department. These two organizations are in large part the beating heart of our community and it’s their time and efforts that make Elk safe and prepared.

You will hear more about this group in the very near future, but in the meantime, we have an immediate opening for a volunteer grant writer. There is just no way around it, Elk needs a volunteer grant writer or two. Time and time again, grants become available that our community could really use. However, by the time we find out about them, determine what projects would meet the particular grant focus, and begin accumulating all the data, the deadline has come and gone.

Other Mendocino County communities have literally generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant monies for large fire and survival projects. Elk needs these grant funds to continue with our own fire and survival projects, as we are falling behind.

If you volunteer for this project, we promise to limit your involvement to three to four grants per year. You will only need to interface with one person to get the basic understanding of the grant and the specific slant of the writing. If you have a computer and Wi-Fi, you will never have to leave your home for anything in the process. And, you will be a hero to the Elk community for solving a decades-old problem that prevents Elk from having the level of safety and security that California mega-droughts and raging wildfires require.

Please reach out to us if you or someone you know has the background or desire to fill this need. We look forward to hearing from you. Contact Sarah Penrod at sjop63@ gmail.com.”
