Time to mix things up

Last October, we introduced a new column into these pages called Club News. It was a slow starter, but over the course of the last six months, I think it’s likely one of our most-read columns now.

That’s thanks in no small part to the four local clubs that signed up to be my guinea pigs: Soroptimist International, Rotary of Fort Bragg, Ocean Wave Quilters and Hubs & Routes.

Each of them did an absolutely amazing job of taking some vague thoughts from me on what their columns should look like, and ran with it — they were full of creativity, and I will be sorry to see them go.

That’s right, I’m kicking them all out, and we’re starting fresh in May with four new clubs here on the coast.

The Soroptimists, Rotarians, Quilters and…I don’t know? Hubs’n’Routers? Well anyway, they’ll all be able to reapply to the column in a year’s time — this cyclical plan is intended to give some of the other groups here on the coast a chance to tell the community all about the wonderful projects they’re working on. And then, every six months, we’ll switch our columnists out again.

So if you know a local group or club that would like to be a part of a monthly column, we’re currently accepting applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. As soon as I get four viable volunteers, I’m shutting the gates for another six months — so be on your toes!

You can apply by emailing me at editor@advocate-news.com. Any group or club from Westport to Gualala is welcome to write in. Please send a few column ideas you have in mind, so we can chat about them. You’re welcome to write about anything under the sun, as long as it remains informational in nature, and has to do with your club’s activities. Pictures are not only allowed, they’re encouraged! Your column gets pride of place on A3 in the paper each month, and the whole community gets to see what good you’re doing. (Sounds like a win-win to me.)

Columns should be no longer than 700 words in length, and are due by noon on the Monday before the paper’s publication on Thursdays. Each club will be assigned a week of the month — i.e: The Soroptimist column has appeared on the first Thursday, the Rotary on the second Thursday, and so on and so forth.

If you have any questions, reach out to me at that email above and I’ll do my best to answer them.

I’m looking forward to this second round of columnists, and hope that Club News will becoming a lasting legacy for the Advocate-News and The Beacon!

Last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to Mary Rose Kaczorowski, Mindy Slaughter, Sharon Lau and Jennifer Kreger for all of their fantastic work and efforts. You really set the bar high, ladies.
